We are wholly dependent on donations from ordinary local people and businesses to keep this campaign going. The burden has fallen disproportionately on a few people who have been willing to donate generously in the battle to preserve our landscape, the living conditions of local communities and our local tourist economy.
As you may know, MAG was forced to hire solicitors in December 2006 in order to force the Borough to face up to the facts regarding the deficiencies in the application and their own breaches of proper procedure. Their Counsel acknowledged that we were right and recommended a deferral.
Everything that has happened since then has totally justified our actions. In the year and a quarter since that deferral, YEL have been forced to reduce the number of turbines yet again, to half the original number. But the necessity of hiring solicitors to ensure that the Borough followed due process has been a major expense to local people.
There remains a major problem with the way outside consultants have handled this case. Members of the Planning Committee recognised that the recent recommendation was still partial, defective and unsubstantiated by planning guidance and we have every confidence that the company will be decisively defeated if they decide to appeal the Committee's decision.
The most expensive phase of the campaign is now approaching. Local turbine applications are now almost certain to go to a public inquiry. This will mean hiring a barrister and expert witnesses to present evidence. All of this is hugely expensive.
We urgently need your help now to prepare for this phase of the campaign.
